The Wake-Up Call: A Birthday Celebration

Editor-in-Chief Genetta Adams joins the Wake-Up Call to discuss the first year of ContrabandCamp.

Before ContrabandCamp Editor-in-Chief Genetta Adams joined today’s live version of the Wake-Up Call, I hadn’t seen her since the inauguration.

No, not that one …

But also that one.

On the day Donald Trump officially became president of the United States for the second time, Genetta Adams, LaTosha Brown, Tiffany Cross, Errin Haines, Jason Johnson, Zack Linly, Wesley Lowery, Elie Mystal, Christine Nyereyegona, Jason Reid, Joy Reid and Karen Reynolds had gathered at the top-secret location for the first annual ContrabandCamp. After preparing ourselves for the second Trump administration, we knew a storm was brewing.

No, not that one …

But also that one.

As a snowstorm hit the East Coast, we returned to reality. Before returning to our respective homes, we had one last task to accomplish. As we prepared to race a storm back to the airport, the “day one” ContrabandCampers paused and waited for Genetta Adams. When she pulled out her laptop and hit the “publish” button, it began to snow. No one clapped or raised their glasses of champagne in a toast. There was no time to celebrate. The storm we had predicted had arrived.

At 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan 20, 2025, ContrabandCamp was born.
