Loved this column. One quibble: Oberlin is on the outskirts of Cleveland, rather than Cincinnati.

Still learning the lesson, I guess, because this made me cry. The good kind, though.

"John Brown didn’t radicalize Black people; we radicalized a little kid named John Brown." A youngster who listens CAN learn (easier with non-hostile parents but I hope it's true for those with hostile parents).

True story: one of my Dad's managers at <big-famous-company> was Black, and a USAF veteran (and reservist, but that's another cool mid-80s story...). I was an aviation geek as a youngster, and asked him all about what he flew etc. etc. I asked him naively, "Did you think about flying an airliner after the Air Force?" I naively though he didn't because of things like "away from family all the time, etc. etc." He just looked at me and pointed at his face, and I may have literally said, "Damn" to him once I realized. That pissed me off... a lot, even though I was glad he was my Dad's manager for a time.

Not all whites. I’m poor and they treat me bad. I know there is no comparison what so ever . But I have been so mistreated where I live. They have called me white trash and all I did was call them because kids “white rich kids” were racing and speeding through a school zone. They told me to get the fuck away from their car before I get arrested for being white trash. Just because of where I lived . I don’t trust any cops and it pisses me off every time I see them treating any one of color bad.

People are really in denial about the fact that the administration wants us dead. Why do you think insurance went up, the attack on child care and food programs. Then on top of that you got ICE running people down in the streets hurting and now killing people. Nine people have died since Jan 1, 2026. They want up to riot and fight ICE. If we are not giving this administration money or favors then we are not even thought about in regard to basic humanity rights.

I’m late to this conversation. I see it’s two days old. Wht a wonderful piece. There’s so much to learn. I grew up in the north. I’m 64, but think that we were sheltered in some weird way by integrating into their world. My parents ran up north and NEVER spoke about what happened to them down south.

While listening I was like wait. What are we doing? The strange thing to me is that blacks were forced to go to church with their enslavers. Then we’re allowed to leave/ were forced out. They then went and created that same church, worshipping the same power of the people that enslaved them?
