A raindrop is not a waterfall.
Some people can’t handle nuance. When they hear someone discussing a subject with intelligence, insight or even basic human compassion, the monochromatic parts of their lizard brains automatically reduce the shades of gray to black and white. To some people, a person who says a racially insensitive remark is the same as a card-carrying Klansman. That’s why two people can read the same thing and walk away with two different conclusions.
For instance, if Stephen A Smith said something that was factually incorrect, some people would call him a “coon” who is intentionally spreading lies and selling out his community. Others would argue that Smith is just a regular American who sometimes expresses unpopular opinions that are held by many people.
The truth is, Stephen A. Smith is not Jason Whitlock, nor is he Jesse Jackson. When someone points out why he’s factually incorrect, they’re not attacking him. Similarly, someone who points out his obvious political leanings is not “making excuses.”
Except for Diddy.
He might be the devil.
Today’s reading list:
In Praise of Black Dependables by Michael Harriot
We All Have a Number by Pablo Torre
Propaganda by Edward Bernays
The last two are the book and the documentary that Diddy recommended.
