The Wake-Up Call: A Map of the Black World

A discussion on history, education and the ways of whiteness.

I don’t fuck with white girls

When I was 12 years old, my mother said: "Son,
There's some things in this world that you should stay away from.
If someone needs a gun when they're out in the streets,
They're a criminal, a killer or, even worse, the police.
Don't ever be influenced by money, pussy or clout.
Don't go anywhere with someone you wouldn't bring to your house

If a man won't take care of his family, stay away from him, too.
If he don't care about his blood, you think he gives a damn about you?
Three things you should never play around with, if you're smart:
God, someone's money and any woman's heart."
No. 1 on her list of the most dangerous things in the world
Was the biggest threat of all: messing with white girls.

I have nothing against people who choose to date white women
In the neighborhood where I grew up, a lot of guys did it
Back then, having a Becky was considered come-up.
My 10th grade year might as well have been "white girl summer."
Oh, in the "Year of the Swirl," white girls were the trend
They invaded every block and bewitched all my friends

Not fucking with white girls didn't make me immune
The Karen Pandemic affected me, too.
My friends had jungle fever by the time I turned sixteen
They didn't even try out for the basketball team
No one went to school; no one cared about grades
I watched the white girl turn my friends into slaves

They'd just stand on the corner from sunup to sundown
And brag about having the best white girl in town.
Sometimes I would try to explain to my friends:
"You love them white hoes; but you're the ones being pimped!"
But they would just tell me the white girls kept them paid,
So, I went off to college. They went to jail or the grave.

But the white girls stayed and took everything they could.
Took my cousin's freedom and my whole neighborhood
Stole my uncle's left arm and my sister's whole life.
Of course, some people would object to my mother's advice
They'll say it's racist and that hate isn't the remedy
Or "Not all white girls..." steal freedom and communities and uncles' appendages.

Maybe my community would be better if they stopped selling drugs.
My homeboys might be genetically predisposed to being thugs.
Or perhaps it's their culture and how their parents raised them
Or maybe the Black community doesn't value education
It's possible that we wouldn't go to jail all the time
If we decided to focus on Black-on-Black crime.

Maybe I do hate white girls. I admit I have a problem.
I'll even acknowledge that I'm pink-toes intolerant.
But sometimes I wonder why no one ever brings up
All of the ways white people fuck with us.
Some Black people would even criticize my mom's advice
for telling me to distrust women just because they're white.

And maybe those people are right, too.
Because not fucking with white girls.
Doesn't mean they won't fuck with you
