Congratulations on the one year anniversary of Contraband Camp!
I really appreciated the introduction to Genetta. It is helpful to me to understand what's happening in the background that is contributing to make the reporting clear and compelling. I always learn something from Contraband Camp. More often than not, I'm left with something that I need, and that I need to think to about. It always feels like life to me.
I too hated history in school (though to be fair, in general I hated school), until I started reading and learning Black history. It was the key for me to make sense of this world that I'm living in, and I'm a 68 year old white woman. So yeah, until Black history, history was boring and didn't make sense to me because it didn't jibe with what I was seeing in the current reality. Context matters to me.
Also, thank you Genetta for saying that you don't read the news on weekends, it is instructive to me in better living. I tend towards too much, too serious. I've learned by listening to Black women that joy is necessary for balanced living. I think that's why I appreciate Michaels style of inserting humor into what is serious. I was raised with people that would have a joke when whatever was happening, or was being said, veered into "too serious" territory. It helped in remembering what needed to be remembered by breaking the tension.
So grateful for Contraband Camp and for Substack being a place where y’all can be yall. Having recently watched the documentary on Sy Hersh, I echo the sentiment about creating/having spaces where the truth can be told/heard and there aren’t power players that are being prioritized over moral ground.
