My divorced mom was scared of the Black Panthers (the FBI propaganda to the white middle class community was relentless), but Shirley's run for the presidency coincided with the women's movement and she loved it and made sure I knew about it. It is a travesty that her historic run wasn't and isn't taught to the white community, and that the true mission of the Black Panthers is still obscured by the FBI smear campaign. Profound lessons for today.
It's because it would really ruin things for America to admit the Black Panthers gave us WIC and free breakfast and lunch programs. Instead they are still painted as a terrorist group and dangerous.
